Why on earth do I want to do this?

One month to go – and training going exceptionally well. Just consumed a large and very rich dinner finished off with key lime pie and soursop ice cream. Making sure I can fit the food to provide the energy for the ride is very important. Finding time to ride is difficult between work and home commitments and there’s a lot to do before going away.
History – in around 1990 I rode from Lands End to John O’ Groats for a City of London charity fundraising and raised around 5,000 pounds (forget actual amount). 900 miles in 8 days or so. Here’s a photo at the end of the trip, apologies for quality, it’s a photo of a photo. The ride was regularly fueled by bananas and cigarettes – I was smoking a good 20 a day at the time.

This time I’ve been nearly 3 1/2 years off the weed and no inclination to start again. 20 years on I actually feel fitter, but have done more riding for this time than before which consisted mostly of commuting 10 miles across London each day.
Grenada is GREAT for cycling! There’s so many hills and variety of riding except for flat – in which case you should ride to the airport and back. I enjoy the country, the views, the people you see along the way. And the dogs – absolutely everywhere. They can be a pain, but a spray from the water bottle soon sorts them out.
I never believed that eventually I would be able to cycle over the whole of Grenada. The climb to Grand Etang is just under 2,000 ft, not much compared with the Alps but it’s steep – especially the last mile and it can be very HOT! The weekend before last I went up one side, down the other and then back again. More like what I’ll be facing next month.
Always enjoyed cycling and always a bit of a challenge. Last year with Tom (nephew) across northern England – fantastic scenery and a hard 160 miles in two days.
But cycling over the Alps is a different thing altogether and I really have no idea if I’ll be able to make it or not. One thing for sure – it’s going to hurt!
